Henshin: The Mahou Shoujo Genre

Welcome!

The magical girl genre is a subgenre of shoujo anime (anime aimed at young girls). Mahou shoujo anime are modern day fairy tales for girls in their adolescence. Stories in this genre are rite of passage stories for young women, filled with symbols and metaphors for puberty. Many images can be feminine that appear in this genre: the moon, flowers, ribbons, etc. Each reoccuring motif in this genre has a meaning. Transformations, for example, are a physical sign of outward and inward changes from childhood to young adulthood.

Updates

April 27, 2008: I'm locked away this weekend for thesis writing, not fun, but at least it means I'm that much closer to finally being finished. I cheated yesterday and did some stuff for this site. So all is slowly but surely coming together.

April 5, 2008: I wanted to mention the Providence Anime Conference in Rhode Island. It's open to older anime fans only and is going to be geared around "professional" and "academic" panels. I'm excited about this, but unfortunately, with nothing yet to measure if the admission price (and for those of us out-of-state) and travel costs will be worth it, I'm sure I'll have to pass this year. I've seen a few fans upset by the age restriction and worry it'll be some "elitist" event. I don't think so. I see it as a chance to conduct panels centered more around business issues and more serious discussions and events than you can have otherwise when you're marketing to a much wider crowd.

I'm working on my thesis now, which cuts down on hobby time and writing time. I did sit down to a couple episodes of MediaBlaster's Tweeny Witches. Not a bad DVD release. It's fourteen episodes of the original (two are joined to count as 1 episode). I forgot how very cool this show is. On renewed viewing, I have to agree with those who don't place it in mahou shoujo, it's more square in the fantasy genre really, but still recommended. Yes, my list is not only out of date, but both missing a couple titles and needing weeding. When the new version of the site goes up, all will be remedied.

March 22, 2008: Yay, my DVD of the Yes! Precure 5 movie arrived. I have to do some stuff for class, so I probably won't get to watch it this weekend. *sad* But for the curious, here is the list of goodies that comes with the limited edition: stickers, the hand light given out in the theater (you might remember seeing this in the trailers), and a small, personal desk calendar that goes up through March 2009. I like these extras better than the ones that came with the last two film DVDs. For Hime-chan no Ribbon fans, this series is coming out as singles as well. DVD 1 with episodes 1-6 hits streets in May, but has just been put up for preorder at CDJapan. Also, if anyone sees any news about the second series of Sally making a DVD debut, please let me know! I'm hoping with series 1 being available, series 2 won't be far behind. It seems impossible to find this anywhere.

March 5, 2008: Tweeny Witches v. 1 is out on R1 DVD this month. Still waiting on the release date of Sasami. The good news on the Sasami release (and this has been confirmed by a Funimation rep on Animeondvd's forums) is it will be two boxsets, one for each season. Yes, we get the entire show. The last volume of Sugar Rune comes out in the fall (I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited about the final manga volume, it's a great series). Other releases scheduled, Kamichama Karin Chuu v. 1 and Shugo Chara v. 4 are both upcoming.

Now, I have a question for the Tweeny Witches fans. Has anyone watched or bought the OVA? From what I can tell, it looks like recap episodes or a kind of best of, the "compilation" is what scares me in the description at CDJapan. I don't want to shell out that much money for recap episodes, only if they're brand new episodes and adventures. So, does anyone know? [Though who's to say they aren't also part of the R1 license, in which case they'll be much, much cheaper.]

I finished watching Yadamon tonight and was quite surprised by the ending. I sorta wondered if that was the route the creators would take, but I wasn't expecting all the surprises given. I'll be posting my thoughts with the episode summaries and hopefully get a debate going later on. They won't be up yet. I'm rewriting and redesigning right now. The site is hopelessly out of date afterall. o.0

February 18, 2008: I hope everyone had a nice Valentines Day. There's Arina Tanemura love coming our way from Viz. The Art of Full Moon will be released October 21, so be keeping your eyes peeled for the artbook this fall.
