The heroine Kagami (aka Akko-chan) loves mirrors. Similar to other Japanese customs, such as honoring and giving a proper burial or rite to a broken or old object like a doll or comb, Akko honors a broken mirror. In gratitude a fairy or queen from the country of mirrors gives her a magic compact and with it Akko can transform into anything or anyone she wishes.

This was the second magical girl series produced, and the first where the heroine was given the power to transform. Before, in the Sally TV series, Sally was simply a witch with adventures in the human world. This was also the first series to implement selling of magical items as toys for fans and children, and to feature a magical companion.
