Leafe is the source of all life (equivalent to spirit or energy of a living thing), and the Leafe Knights protect it. But 16 years ago after sealing the Disaster Queen, Fenrir, the Knights need the power of a Pretear to protect the world. The Pretear's power comes from merging with a Leafe Knight and combining her own energy with his. Awayuki Himeno finds herself as the next Pretear.

The story seems straightforward at its start, but once the true identity of Fenrir is revealed, a very interesting dual mirror between the two main females comes into play. To say more would give spoilers here. In addition, the cast of Himeno and her family each have distinct personalities and troubles of their own, all of which are the true center of Himeno's story, that of her and her family. Himeno's mother died when she was little and now her father has remarried a wealthy widow with two daughters. One stepsister is quite eccentric, enjoying spending her time building traps for her stepsister to fall into, and the other keeps to herself turning the pain and loneliness over the loss of her father inward.

The anime is a mix of elements from magical girl shows like Sailor Moon with a story like Blue Seed. It is one of the more character driven of recent magical girl stories.
