Henshin: The Mahou Shoujo Genre

New Legend of the Snow White Princess Pretear

Butterfly
The butterfly, like many things in this series, has a dual aspect to it. It represents both sides of the feminine. First, it appears with Takako as her familiar as the Disaster Queen. Familiars have an old association with feminine magic, both as a vessel for the magic or a witch or as a companion. Like Fenrir, the butterflies take Leafe, the lifeforce. They are an extension of the destructive aspect of a goddess or the feminine. Himeno as Snow Pretear at the end transforms of her own will and gains butterfly wings. The butterfly becomes her familiar as well, an extension of the rebirth and creative, life-giving goddess and feminine. As the Snow Pretear, Himeno can give back Leafe and life-energy.

Elements/Leafe Knights
Leafe represents several things: spirit, life-force, energy, essence. Elements make up components representing Earth and nature, and each Leafe Knight has a power representing one of the elements. But, the power of the Leafe Knight and the girl chosen as Pretear represent another important aspect of life, the male and female, merging of opposites and renewal of life. To transform, the Pretear takes the hand of one of the knights, energy emanates and the two are shown symbolically naked pulling together until the knight disappears into the Pretear. Thus she takes him into herself/her body, merging their lifeforce or spirit as one. The union is a highly spiritual one, requiring complete trust and faith to enact. But it also is an implied symbolic sexual union, a merging of body and soul, by the life-giving and protective forces the knights and Pretear represent. The union is the highest form of energy of nature or symbol of life cycles on this representative progression.

Fenrir
The great wolf from Norse myth of Ragnarok which will devour Odin. This is the name given to Takako as the Disaster Queen. Her only ties to the Fenrir mythical figure are that she is at first imprisoned and is to appear again and aid in an overall destruction.

Fetal Position
Symbol of the inside of the unconscious or swimming within it in anime. See this with Mawata in episode 12. Other anime it shows up in are with Usagi talking to her mother's spirit in Sailor Moon R and Yui at the end of Fushigi Yuugi.

Hair
Hair can have several layers of meaning attached to it. It can fall into the realm of a link to enchantment. In Anderson's The Little Mermaid, while the title character's most valuable possession is the mermaid's voice (also associated with magic as a mermaid's singing could enchant sailors), her sisters' possession to trade to the sea witch is their hair. Usagi in the Sailor Moon manga once her princess side is awakened can't keep her hair from growing overly long. In some instances, extra long hair becomes a seductive symbol as in the case of Mistress 9 from the same. In some mahou shoujo it is a sign of maturity. All these aspects underly Takako's hair when she becomes Fenrir.

Kiss
The kiss Hayate gives Himeno in the last episode falls under the fairy tale/magical variety. Himeno transformed into the Snow Pretear and gave her Leafe to return life and hope to those she loved. To bring her out of her deathlike sleep, Hayate awakens her with a kiss that passes his own Leafe to her (similar to the life-giving kiss at the end of the Sailor Moon R movie). The kiss also carries on the meanings brought into play in the transformation into a Pretear explained above.

Snow
Like the butterfly, it is a dual symbol. The red snow is attached to Takako and the destructive nature of feminine emotion and power, and the white with Himeno and the ckeansing, hope-filled side. White also for rebirth.

Tree
The great tree of Fenrir. It is a negative world tree, the negative aspect of the earth mother. Takako sets the tree up to take the Leafe from the world and so sets it, through Mawata and her loneliness at the core, as the heart of the world. But Takako and Mawata devour the Leafe and destroy the natural world and the life-energy that supports it. It isn't until Himeno transforms to Snow Pretear and feeds it pure Leafe that it's cleansed until it bursts and rains snow and rejuvenating Leafe upon everything, thus cleansing the negative world tree here of its destructive power.
