Henshin: The Mahou Shoujo Genre

Code Name wa Sailor V Notes

Adonis
Aphrodite's beloved. Youthful and handsome, he dies while out hunting a boar. In her grief, Aphrodite causes the anemone to sprout from his blood. (For the myth concerning the rose, Adonis, and Aphrodite, see the Roses page). In the manga, Adonis bears the mark of Venus on his forehead, and tells her he is her "mystical lover." And just as the myth ends in tragedy and grief for the lovers, so does the manga. [For the astronomers - there is also an asteroid named Adonis that is found in the Apollo asteroid group.]

Chuu-Chuu
From Ian Miller: "The Japanese term "chu~ chu~ su~" means "to suck," as in what a mosquito does. "Chu- chu~" by itself seems to indicate a chirping or squeaking noise."

Dahlia
Minako's birth flower. It means fickleness. (Alex Glover's translation).

Danburite
A mineral. It is not well-known. Originally it was found in Danbury, Connecticut. Usually it is clear or white.

Earth and Venus as Twin Planets
In astronomy, Venus has been called the twin sister of Earth. Both planets are about the same size. If another planet could support life, it was once thought to be Venus (of course, now it's realized that the heat and sulphur make that impossible).

Electronic Fighter Girl Luga
Luga is a crater on the planet Mars and also a god of the Isles. His power is over prophecy, revenge, reincarnation, and healing, and over war. From Ian Miller: "Luga's full Japanese title is 'denno~ sho~jo to~shi' which means 'electri-brain girl-warrior.' The 'to~' in the title means 'war.'"

Fluorite
A stone. Can represent protection, intuition, and health.

Hibiskos
Greek for marsh mallow (a type of plant). It is the name hibiscus comes from, the state flower of Hawaii.

Kaitou Ace
Kaitou means mysterious thief.

Narkissos
Narcissus. Sleep, from narke in Greek. In mythology he rejected Echo's (a nymph) love, so was punished by Aphrodite to fall in love with his reflection in a pool. The flower he was later changed into became known as the narcissus.

Nyan-Nyan
Nyan is what Japanese cats say. Meaning, meow.

Pandora and Petite Pandora
In mythology, Pandora was made by Hephaestus from the earth. She was given beauty and charm, but also cunning thought, deceit, and flattering speech. She is most famous for opening a jar containing all evils which she unleashed unknowingly into the world.

Pearl
Venus droplet. Aphrodite (meaning Foam-Born) was once a sea goddess, and was born from the sea. Since the pearl and Aphrodite were born together, the pearl became a fertility symbol.

V
From Sailor Tin Nyanko: "When Venus was Sailor V she was pretending to be Princess Moon. In Science and some other areas dealing with planets and such, "V" is used to name Venus when it is at a point where it is mistaken for the Moon. See usually for the first hour of Dawn and the first hour of Dusk, Venus becomes large and clearly visable... at which point it is mistaken for the Moon. Some times it is seen longer, but the term "V" is used to refer to Venus being mistaken for the Moon."

Also from Sailor Tin Nyanko on "Crescent Beam Smash:" "Venus is a Crescent V when it is most visable twice a day and for a long period. Also during this time it becomes much easier to monitor the ever going meteor storms rageing around and into Venus. Venus is known well for being the planet most hit by Meteor Showers."

Venus and the Moon
Even though Sailor V's guardian planet is Venus, much of her powers and associations are for the Moon as well. For example: shouts "Moon Power Transform" and her compact has to be placed in the light of the full moon to charge it. In astronomy the two are alike, in that Venus undergoes phases like those of the Moon, even crescenting. Astrologically, they are also pretty close since Venus rules love and the Moon rules emotions. And finally, mythologically speaking, both Aphrodite and Venus were once considered goddesses of the Moon.

Wan-Wan
Wan is a dog's bark.

Here is a chart made by Ian Miller that shows how the names are written in Japanese, translated, and their origin.
